How to Mute Someone on Instagram (Without Them Knowing)

To mute someone on Instagram, open their profile, tap Following, then tap Mute and switch on the toggles for Posts, Stories or Notes. You carry on following them, their content stops reaching your feed, and Instagram does not tell them you did it.

Mute is the quietest lever Instagram gives you. Unfollowing moves a number the other person can see. Blocking cuts off everything and is obvious the moment they look for you. Mute changes nothing on their side — it only stops their content arriving on yours.

It is also more granular than most people expect. Posts, Stories and Notes are separate switches, so you can keep watching someone's stories while their grid posts disappear from your feed, or the other way round.

How to mute someone on Instagram in four taps

1. Open the profile of the account you want to mute. You can reach it from the search tab, from one of their posts in your feed, or from your own following list.

2. Tap Following, the button directly under their bio. A sheet slides up carrying the options that only apply to accounts you already follow.

3. Tap Mute. The sheet becomes a list of toggles, all switched off by default.

4. Switch on whatever you want to stop seeing. Posts takes their photos and videos out of your feed. Stories takes them out of the story tray at the top. Notes hides the short text notes they post above your inbox.

The panel on current versions also lists Activity bubbles on content and Notes on the map. Instagram's published help pages cover Posts, Stories and Notes but do not describe these two, so we won't guess at their scope — set them by preference and check the result in your own feed.

A faster route if you only want the stories gone

You do not have to open a profile at all. Press and hold someone's picture in the story tray at the top of your feed and tap Mute. Instagram documents this shortcut as the standard way to mute a story.

Muted stories are not deleted — they collect at the far end of the tray, stop showing the coloured ring when there is something new, and no longer play automatically when you tap through everyone else's. They are still there if you deliberately go looking.

What muting does not do

When you mute someone on Instagram, the effect is narrower than most people assume, and the gaps are where the surprises live.

It does not unfollow anyone. Your following count and their follower count both stay exactly where they were, which is the entire reason people reach for mute instead.

It does not hide their profile from you. Instagram states that you can still see their posts on their profile page — mute filters your feed, not their account.

It does not silence direct messages. Message muting is a separate control: open the chat, tap the i in the top right, then use Mute messages or Mute call notifications. Muting someone's posts leaves your inbox untouched.

It does not stop tags and mentions. Instagram is explicit that you still get notified about comments or posts you are tagged in, even from a muted account.

It does not hide whether you are online. That is a different setting again — see turning off your active status, which works both ways once you switch it off.

And it is not Restrict, which sits one line below it in the same menu. Restrict is aimed at someone bothering you: it hides their comments from other people and stops them seeing when you are online. Mute simply tidies your feed.

Common questions

Will they find out? Instagram's own announcement of the feature says the accounts you mute will not be aware that you have muted them. No notification is sent, and nothing on their profile or yours changes visibly.

Can I mute a story without muting posts? Yes. The toggles are independent, which is the point of the panel. Mute Stories, leave Posts alone, and their grid keeps appearing in your feed as normal.

How do I undo it? Exactly the same path — profile, Following, Mute — and switch the toggles back off. Instagram notes that unmuting brings their posts back into your feed, though it may take a little while before the algorithm surfaces them again.

If the Mute option isn't there

The most common reason is that you do not follow the account. Mute lives inside the Following menu, so if that button says Follow instead, there is no menu to open. Follow first, or simply stop visiting the profile.

If you do follow them and the option is still missing, update the app — the mute panel has gained switches over time and older builds show a shorter list or none at all. The desktop site is also less consistent than the phone apps here, so try the procedure on your phone before concluding the setting has gone.
