How to Put Beats in Pairing Mode (Buds and Headphones)

Every Beats model enters pairing mode the same way: hold one button until the light flashes white. Which button depends on whether you own earbuds or headphones.

How to Put Beats in Pairing Mode (Buds and Headphones)
To put Beats in pairing mode, hold one button until the indicator light flashes white. On earbuds with a charging case — Studio Buds, Studio Buds +, Fit Pro, Powerbeats Pro — put both buds in the case, leave the lid open, and hold the system button inside the case. On headphones such as Solo 4 and Studio Pro, hold the power or system button on the right earcup instead.

Beats hardware has no pairing menu and no app step you have to find first. There is one button per model, and holding it is the whole procedure. The confusion is almost always about which button, because Apple moved it between the case and the earcup depending on the form factor.

Worth knowing before you start: a flashing white light means the Beats are discoverable and waiting. If the light never flashes, the Beats are not in pairing mode yet, and tapping away at your phone's Bluetooth list will not help until it does.

Where to put Beats in pairing mode, by model

Apple publishes the button location per model, and it splits cleanly along one line: if your Beats live in a charging case, the button is in the case; if they go on your head, the button is on the right earcup.

1. Earbuds with a charging case. This covers Beats Studio Buds, Studio Buds +, Beats Fit Pro, Powerbeats Pro, Powerbeats Pro 2 and Powerbeats Fit. Put both earbuds in the case, open the lid and leave it open, then press and hold the system button on the case. Release when the LED on the front of the case starts flashing white.

2. Beats Solo Buds. These work slightly differently. With both buds in the case and the lid open, hold the button above the "b" logo on either earbud until you hear a tone repeat. Solo Buds signal with sound rather than a case light.

3. Beats Solo 4. Hold the power button on the right earcup. Beats' own support page for the Solo 4 notes that the indicator you are watching is on the left earcup, and it blinks white when the headphones are discoverable.

4. Beats Studio Pro. Hold the system button on the right earcup until the light flashes.

5. Beats Flex. Hold the power button on the right control module — the small inline unit on the cable, not the earbuds themselves.

6. Beats Pill and Beats 360. On the Pill, hold the power button until a tone repeats. On Beats 360, the power button is on the back of the left earcup.

Apple does not publish a hold duration for any of these, and neither does Beats. Hold until the light flashes or the tone repeats rather than counting seconds — the cue is the instruction.

The faster route on an iPhone or iPad

If you are pairing to an iPhone or iPad, you usually do not need pairing mode at all. Turn Bluetooth on, unlock the phone, then open the case with the earbuds inside, or switch the headphones on, and hold them near the device. A setup card slides up from the bottom of the screen and walks you through it.

That one-tap setup is the intended path, and it also pushes your Beats to your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Pairing mode is the manual fallback for when the card does not appear, which is where the button-hold above comes back in: start pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the Beats under Other Devices.

Pairing to Android, Windows and everything else

On Android the flow mirrors Apple's. Several Beats models support Google's Fast Pair, so a card appears on screen when you open the case nearby. If it does not, put the Beats in pairing mode and go to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, tap your Beats in the list, then tap Pair. Menu names vary a little between Samsung's One UI and stock Android.

For a laptop the only extra step is making sure the radio is switched on first, which is not always obvious on Windows — turning on Bluetooth on Windows 10 takes two different routes depending on your build. After that it is the same handshake any wireless earbuds use; our walkthrough for connecting AirPods to a Dell laptop covers the Windows side of that flow step by step.

What pairing mode does not do

Pairing mode is not a reset. It makes the Beats discoverable to a new device; it does not clear the devices they already know, fix a bud that will not charge, or undo a firmware problem. Beats stay paired to everything they have met, and they reconnect to whichever one claims them first.

That last detail causes most of the "my Beats won't pair" reports. If your Beats are sitting in pairing mode but your phone never finds them, something else nearby — a laptop, a tablet, a TV — has probably grabbed the connection already. Turn Bluetooth off on that device and try again.

Pairing mode also does not survive indefinitely. If you leave the Beats discoverable and wander off, they drop out of it, and you simply hold the button again.

Common questions

Why is the light flashing red and white instead of white? That is the reset indicator, not the pairing indicator. You have held the button long enough to trigger a factory reset, which is a different procedure with a different button combination on most models.

Do I have to put both earbuds in the case? For the case-based models, yes. Apple's instructions specify both buds in the case with the lid open, and the system button will not behave predictably with one missing.

Can Beats be connected to two devices at once? Apple's documentation describes pairing and switching between devices rather than a simultaneous dual connection, and behaviour differs by model. If this matters to you, check the support page for your specific model rather than assuming.

If the button does nothing

Charge first. A flat case or a flat earcup will not enter pairing mode, and a case that looks charged can still be too low to power the buds. Give it twenty minutes on the cable and try again.

If the light still never flashes, a reset is the next step, and it differs by model: Fit Pro, Studio Buds + and Powerbeats Pro 2 use fifteen seconds on the case system button until the light flashes red and white; Solo 4 uses volume down on the left earcup plus power on the right for ten seconds; Studio Pro uses ten seconds on the right earcup's system button. Apple lists the exact combination for every model, and getting it wrong usually just does nothing rather than causing harm.

After a reset the Beats are a blank slate and need pairing from scratch. If they still will not show up on any device, that is a hardware conversation — Beats support can check warranty status from the serial number printed inside the case lid or on the headband.

How we work

Every step checked before it reaches you.

Menus move, settings get renamed and features quietly disappear. So each guide is written against the vendor's current documentation rather than from memory, and says plainly when a fix depends on your version.
